Meaningful Beauty
Mike Mignola - Creator of Hellboy, Mike Mignola's storytelling ability woven with his intimate knowledge of obscure folklore made him my favorite author/artist. Hellboy continuously probes the dark world of ancient folklore, mostly forgotten today. In the Hellboy collections Mike talks about how he found obscure local legends and stories, and works them into Hellboy stories. I have the complete Hellboy works, and it's one of my most prized collections. ------------------------------------------------------------ Scottish Fairy and Folk Tales selected and edited with an introduction by Sir George Douglas - This is one of the most fascinating books I've ever had the good fortune to read. It contains dozens of ancient tales from Scotland. Some are even first hand accounts written up phonetically, and while difficult to read, they give you a rare insight into the actual people behind the tales. A lot of stories in Waterhorse have elements taken from stories found in this book, and like Mike Mignola I've taken an original plot and original characters and put them through these classic tales, using these stories as a base from which to launch a new story. ------------------------------------------------------------ Sir Walter Scott - What can one say about Sir Walter Scott? He's a champion in the field of lore and all things supernatural. It was in Scott's book 'Letters on Demonology and Witchcraft' that I first read about the mythical Lucken Hare cave. Sir Walter Scott is a great writer and folklorist. ------------------------------------------------------------ An excellent website on the source of Scottish faeries and monsters is http://www.fife.50megs.com/faeries.htm This is the website where I actually got the name Waterhorse for my town. I read about the Ly Erg, Fachan, and Nuckelavee here first. It's a fantastic resource.
